The sun had long set over the city of Los Angeles, leaving the streets shrouded in darkness. Private detective Jack Marlowe sat in his dimly lit office, cigarette smoke curling lazily around his head. “I’m afraid I can’t say,” Morgan replied. “But I assure you, the pay will be more than satisfactory.”
Marlowe considered the offer for a moment. He could use the money, and any job was better than sitting around twiddling his thumbs. “All right,” he said at last. “I’m in. What’s the job?”
Morgan leaned in close, his breath hot against Marlowe’s ear. “My client wants you to find a certain piece of evidence. Something that was stolen from them. Something very valuable.”
Marlowe frowned. “What kind of evidence are we talking about here?”
Morgan gave a sly grin. “Let’s just say it’s evidence that could put a certain someone in jail for a very long time.”
Marlowe’s stomach twisted. He had a feeling he knew exactly what Morgan was getting at. “I don’t do blackmail,” he said firmly.
Morgan’s grin widened. “Of course not. But I think you’ll find that the rewards for finding this evidence will far outweigh any moral objections you might have.”
Marlowe stared at the man for a moment, weighing his options. He knew he shouldn’t get involved, that it was a surefire way to get himself in trouble. But the thought of a big payout was too tempting to resist.
“All right,” he said at last. “I’ll take the job. But I’m warning you, if this gets messy, I’m out.”
Morgan’s grin faded into a thin-lipped smile. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.”
